And so it ends...
Well, my last day in Maui… the week has gone by pretty quick… though I did a lot, saw a lot… got tons of sun and water…
Today I slept in again… then got up, rented some snorkel gear and went down to the south end of Malu’aka beach, which is supposed to have lots of turtles around… I only went a few hundred meters out from the beach though cause the surf was pretty choppy… about 4 foot swells, which isn’t great for snorkeling… one second I’d be 5-6 feet above the coral, and the next I’d be almost on top of it… I spent a good deal of time trying to position myself down current from the taller coral…
I had my Aquapac and camera with me and took some pictures, but because the ocean was so rough, the pictures look pretty murky…. The video I took looked pretty good though:
I didn’t see any turtles, but did see tons of fish… even a puffer fish… but he wasn’t puffed… I followed it for a bit before a big wave came and stirred up the bottom again… it’s quite disorienting when that happens… visibility goes to zero and I couldn’t be sure if there was any coral around me, or how deep the water was….
Still, it was fun… I think the next time out I’ll try to get to Molokini to do some snorkelling… or maybe snuba… or maybe even get my PADI certificate…
well, I’m sitting in the airport now waiting for my plane to leave… by weird coincidence, Kevin Bretherick just came by… he was working the Vancouver to Maui flight tonight… he’s here till tomorrow night… I wouldn’t mind a job that had overnights in Maui…
I Can't Feel My Lips! 2
So we went snorkeling today… it was the bombdiggity…
A few times during snorkelling, Scott and I felt these stings… like someone was pulling out a leg hair or something… not too bad… kinda annoying, and you think a bit more about what’s in the ocean…
At one of the stops, I was swimming and looking at jellyfish, which is quite beautiful from about 20 feet… when I felt this sting on my upper lip… my mouth went numb and i spit out my snorkel, swallowing some salt water in the process… not a great feeling i promise …. i don’t know what it was but i’m assuming it was a smaller jellyfish I just didn’t see… the feeling came back after a few hours… still feels kinda funny now though…
other than that, the day was awesome… we hopped on a speed boat this morning and jetted across the bay to a few Bamboo Island and Ma Ya Beach for snorkeling before stopping in Phi Phi Don for lunch… mmm… curry …. Then it was more snorkelling this afternoon…. it’s quite humid here and hot, but it’s nice on the water on a moving boat… quite baywatch-esq if you get the look and point right… fun times…
tomorrow, kayaking… then on to Phuket… remember the pronunciation kids….
